PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus that performs individual optimum image processing on each of a portion of an image illuminated by a light source and a portion of the image shaded from the light source, to provide an image capturing apparatus and an image processing method, and to provide a computer program. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus includes: a sunny area/shadow area separation means to separate input processing image data into sunny areas and shadow areas based on a feature value of the processing image data; an information acquisition means to acquire information of image processing suitable for the sunny areas and that suitable for the shadow areas; and an image processing means to execute the image processing suitable for the sunny areas by the information of image processing suitable for the sunny areas and/or execute the image processing suitable for the shadow areas by the information of image processing suitable for the shadow areas.
