ROTARY SENSOR

A rotary sensor (1) comprises a housing member (2) fixed to a vehicle frame (B), a rotor (4) made of conductive material and fixed to a support member (S), a coil (31) retained in the housing member (2) such that the distance between the rotor (4) and the coil varies as the support member (S) rotates relative to the vehicle frame and a detection circuit capable of detecting the orientation of the support member with respect to the vehicle frame (B) based on the impedance of the coil (31). As compared with a rotary switch, the rotary sensor has no members such as a movable contact and a stationary contact in a space between the housing member (2) and the rotor (4) making it possible to omit sealing members for sealing the space and thus reducing the cost of manufacture and lengthening service life because no parts are subject to wear.
