<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation apparatus and a separation method of waste quantitatively supplying waste to a specific gravity separator without using a large scale equipment like a supply hopper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The separation apparatus separates waste by the difference of specific gravity by supplying the waste from a supply feeder 6 to the gravity separator 1. The separation apparatus includes: sensors 7, 8 detecting the presence/absence of waste disposed at an inlet part and an outlet part of the supply feeder 6, respectively; and a control device controlling on/off of the supply feeder 6 and specific gravity separator 1 using signals from the sensors, In the separation method of waste using the separation apparatus, after detecting the presence of waste at the inlet part of the supply feeder 6, the feeder is operated; after detecting the presence of waste at the outlet part of the supply feeder 6, the gravity separator 1 is operated; the supply feeder 6 is stopped at the same time of detecting the absence of waste at the outlet part of the supply feeder 6; and the specific gravity separator 1 is stopped after detecting absence of waste at the outlet part of the supply feeder 6.
