PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an EL element that attains improvement in light extraction efficiency and cost reduction, and to provide a backlight device which uses the element, a lighting device, an electronic signboard device and a display device. SOLUTION: The EL element 20 is provided with a substrate 21, a negative electrode 22 formed on one side 21a of the substrate 21, a luminous layer 23 formed on the face of the negative electrode 22 on a side opposite to the substrate 21, a transparent positive electrode 24 formed on the face of the luminous layer 23 on the side opposite to the negative electrode 22, and a light-extracting sheet 25 of light transmission properties installed on the face of the positive electrode 24 on the opposite side to the luminous layer 23. A plurality of convex parts 25a which emit a light generated in the luminous layer 23 from the surface are formed on the surface of the light-extracting sheet 25 on the side opposite to the positive electrode 24.
