PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in short wavelength signal recording characteristics. SOLUTION: This invention relates to a method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium configured by forming a magnetic layer through applying a magnetic coating material containing magnetic powder and a binder (binder resin) to one of the main surfaces of a nonmagnetic base. The magnetic coating material is prepared through: a step of kneading the magnetic powder and the binder (binder resin) at the first solid concentration in a batch kneading machine to obtain a kneaded magnetic material; and a step of diluting the kneaded magnetic material to the second solid concentration lower than the first solid concentration to obtain a diluted magnetic coating material by using the batch kneading machine and a continuous kneading machine connected thereto in series.
