PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably detect the position of a contour of an object. SOLUTION: A CPU 10 sets a rectangular measurement object area elongated in the direction along x-axis and y-axis of a processing object image on the premise that a processing object image including image data of R, G, B generated by imaging with a color camera 2 and stored in image memories 12, 13, 14 are distinguished by using two kinds of colors. A narrow rectangular small area is set within a measurement object area with a shorter side thereof aligned with the scanning direction, and while scanning is performed at predetermined intervals within the measurement object area by the small area, an average color within the small area at each scanning position is obtained. Further, in the color space taking the respective color components of R, G, B as axes, the average colors obtained at each scanning position are traced in order to extract a point where a distance from a starting point of tracing first exceeds a predetermined threshold, and the position of a small area when the average color corresponding to the point is discriminated as a boundary position of two kinds of colors.
