PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition attaining an excellent finish appearance, and to provide a 3-coat 1-bake method wherein a first water-based color coating material, a second water-based color coating material, and a clear coating material are successively applied to an object to be coated and the resultant three-layered coating film is heated and cured at the same time, the method enabling a multilayered coating film having excellent smoothness and clarity to be formed. SOLUTION: The water-based coating composition comprises: (A) an acrylic resin; (B) a hardener; and (C) an emulsion of a urethane resin obtained from constituent ingredients comprising: a polyisocyanate component containing an alicyclic diisocyanate, and a polycarbonate diol component obtained from a diol component containing alicyclic diol having an at least 6C cycloalkylene group. The method for forming multilayer coating film of the 3-coat 1-bake method carries out heating/curing of the multilayer coating film of three layers using the composition simultaneously.
