Provided is a catalyst for the production of chlorine by oxidizing hydrogen chloride with oxygen, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity and can be stably supplied at a low cost, and which is suitable for use in a fluidized-bed reactor. Also provided is a process for the production of chlorine using the catalyst. The catalyst for the production of chlorine is characterized in that: the catalyst comprises spherical particles which contain (A) copper, (B) an alkali metal, and (C) a lanthanoid, and which have an average sphericity of 0.80 or larger; the lanthanoid (C) exhibits a lanthanoid-oxygen bond dissociation energy of 100 to 185kcal/mol at 298K; and the content of copper (A) in the catalyst is 0.3 to 4.5wt%. |
