PURPOSE: A mobile terminal and a method for controlling a background screen are provided to use the touch of a user to change the state of a background, thereby conveniently changing and setting a background screen. CONSTITUTION: A control unit(180) assigns a function icon about a plurality of areas including a first area. A touch screen displays a first image including a function icon assigned to the first area as a background screen. If a touch corresponding to the background screen change command is inputted through the touch screen, the control unit displays a second image including a function icon assigned to other area except the first area as a background screen.
