Two compounded epicyclic gearsets (12,14) have gear members (16,36) respectively connected to an input shaft (23) and an output shaft (18). The input shaft is connected to a prime mover such as an engine. Two electrical machines which act as generator and motor have rotors (52,54) connected to the gear members of the gearsets, and stators (44,46) which are electrically connected via controllers (56,58). The controllers are arranged to control the flow of electrical power between the electrical machines and an energy receiver. The controllers operate to direct proportion of electrical power from the electrical machine that operates as generator to the energy receiver, increasing torque applied to the output shaft. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating electromechanical transmission system. |
