Polyvinyl chloride is plasticized by a hydrocarbon comprising a single benzene nucleus substituted by one or more aliphatic chains having at least 10 carbon atoms which is halogenated in the nucleus and/or in the chain. Tricresyl phosphate may also be present. In examples: (1) a 30 per cent chlorinated aliphatic gas oil is condensed with benzene and the distillation product is chlorinated to 40 per cent in carbon tetrachloride to yield a plasticiser; (2) excess monochlorbenzene is condensed with a fraction of Fischer's gas oil having a mean molecular weight of 225 and being 30 per cent chlorinated. The product is fractionated and further chlorinated to 38 per cent, yielding a chloroalkylchlorobenzene plasticizer. |
