PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for transmitting and receiving a message are provided to switch the configuration of a screen according to the selection of a user when transmitting and receiving at least two continuous text messages. CONSTITUTION: A controller(330) judges whether a screen mode for outputting a received message is a general mode or chatting mode. A screen generating unit(350) configures a screen according to the judgment result. The general mode includes a screen mode for displaying the received message on a screen, and the chatting mode includes a screen mode for displaying the previously transmitted and received message to the terminal of the other party which transmits the message.
