Emergency lighting devices (10) and systems for providing emergency illumination. Lighting devices (10) can have a housing (12), a light source (24), and a drive arrangement for driving the light source (24) between retracted and extended positions. Flanges (74), which can be removable, can project from the housing (12). Fastening arrangements can retain lighting devices (10) in relation to a support surface. A motor (54) in combination with a drive screw (40) threadedly engaged with the light source (24) can form a drive arrangement to produce axial movement of the light source (24), and a reflector can guide light from the light source (24). An emergency condition sensor can trigger an extension and illumination of the light source (24) . A battery can provide secondary power, and central control unit can control multiple lights.
