<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel injection device immediately returning a closing assist piston to an initial position and efficiently controlling fuel injection. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This fuel injection device 1 includes a nozzle body 40 and an injection control valve 20 advancing and retreating in a first fuel storage chamber 41. When the injection control valve 20 advances to a first position, a first fuel passage 51 communicates with the first fuel storage chamber 41, and also the first fuel storage chamber 41 is disconnected from a third fuel passage 53. When the injection control valve retreats to a second position, the first fuel passage 51 is disconnected from the first fuel storage chamber 41, and also the first fuel storage chamber 41 communicates with the third fuel passage 53. A needle valve closing chamber 43 communicating with the third fuel passage 53 has the closing assist piston 30, a closing assist pressure chamber 432, a return pressure chamber 433, and a communication passage 434 for allowing the closing assist pressure chamber 432 to communicate with the return pressure chamber 433 when the closing assist piston 30 advances by a predetermined distance.
