<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save space for an abnormality detection mechanism, to improve productivity and to suitably detect abnormality, when detecting the abnormality of a light source in an image reader on the basis of an electric state in the power supply terminal of the light source. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The abnormality detecting device includes a timing clock generation part 131 for outputting S<SB>LED</SB>to an LED driver 133 and outputting S<SB>CTR</SB>to an abnormality detection circuit 133, and an engine control part 102 for controlling a timing determination operation of determining the output timing of the S<SB>CTR</SB>. The abnormality detection circuit 134 outputs a signal indicating that the light source is abnormal as S<SB>ERR</SB>when executing the abnormality detection of the light source in the non-lighting state of the light source 122a, and the engine control part 102 determines the output timing of the S<SB>CTR</SB>on the basis of the signal state of the S<SB>ERR</SB>after the S<SB>LED</SB>and the S<SB>CTR</SB>are output in the timing determining operation.
