<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly durable encoder capable of preventing exfoliation of a magnet member to temperature change. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The magnet member M having a magnetic pattern formed thereon, and expanding thermally in a prescribed direction is held by using a holding surface 22a along a prescribed direction formed on a projection part 22 of a rotation part R, to thereby reduce a thermal stress. The projection part 22 of the rotation part R is formed elastically deformably to thermal expansion of the magnet member M by providing a pocket part 23 with respect to the projection part 22, to thereby reduce a stress applied to the holding surface 22a from the magnet member M.
