<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus, favorably reducing impact force caused in transferring an image. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes: an intermediate transfer belt 21 supporting a toner image; a transfer unit 50; and a drive unit for moving the transfer unit 50. The transfer unit 50 includes: a transfer roller 51 opposite to the intermediate transfer belt 21; a roller member 52 provided substantially parallel to the transfer roller 51; and a belt member 53 stretched between the transfer roller 51 and the roller member 52 to wrap round the rollers. In the condition where the transfer unit 50 exists in a position PG2, a secondary transfer roller 51 separates from the opposite position to the intermediate transfer belt 21 and a flexible part of the belt member 53 is opposite to the intermediate transfer belt 21. When the thickness of paper PA is larger than a threshold, the transfer unit 50 is moved to the position PG2, and the paper PA dashes into an opposite portion of the intermediate transfer belt 21 and the flexible part of the belt member 53.
