PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader smoothly reading an image after eliminating a cause of document transport interruption, and preventing damage of a document; and a copy machine. SOLUTION: When a cause of document transport interruption occurs, movement of a first contact lens 154 is stopped; a resist sensor 65 and a paper discharge sensor 61 detect absence of the document; and, when an ADF 51 is closed, a body control part 200 executes control to restore the first contact glass 154 to a home position. In any of a state where the paper discharge sensor 61 detects presence of paper, where the resist sensor detects presence of paper and where the ADF is opened, the control to restore the first contact glass 154 to the home position is not executed.
