PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator which includes a thin plate of≤150μm thickness and a reinforcing plate bonded to the rear surface of the thin plate, with the optical modulator having improved reliability, in terms of temperature drift and DC drift by effectively removing the influence due to the pyroelectric effect. SOLUTION: The optical modulator includes the thin plate formed by a material having an electrooptical effect, and having a thickness of≤150μm; an optical waveguide formed on the thin plate; a modulating electrode for modulating light passing in the optical waveguide; and the reinforcing plate of which the thickness is thicker the thin plate. In the optical modulator, a pyroelectric effect reducing part which is formed by a material equivalent to a thin plate material, has substantially equal substrate thickness and is arranged so that the spontaneous polarization direction is opposite to that of the thin plate is formed between the thin plate and the reinforcing plate.
