<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt conveying device and image forming apparatus that correct deformation in a belt member. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A control section 62 drives a motor 46 and rotates an intermediate transfer belt 25 one time, and also actuates an optical sensor 60, thereby detecting any deformed part of the intermediate transfer belt 25. The control section moves the deformed part to a position where it contacts the tension imparting roll 50, and reciprocates the intermediate transfer belt 25 while keeping the tension imparting roll 50 and deformed part in contact with each other, thereby correcting the deformation caused in the intermediate transfer belt 25.
