<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vane rotary compressor to be used for air-conditioning a vehicle while preventing the chattering of a vane by raising the back pressure of the vane in a stroke of setting itself in a vane groove to stabilize the behavior of the vane. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The cross section area of the approximately circular groove 9 in a stroke of setting the vane therein through a vane maximum elongation position is reduced to increase flow path resistance during moving fluid in a vane back pressure chamber. Thus, pressure in the vane back pressure chamber 17 is raised to increase the pushing force of the vane 4 against the wall face of a cylinder 1 to stabilize the behavior of the vane, therefore preventing chattering to improve quietness.
