<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic tensioner with superior assembly workability to an engine, capable of retaining a screw rod in a screwed state into a female screw member. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The automatic tension includes the female screw member 10 having a female screw 15 on an inner circumference, the screw rod 11 having a male screw 16 engaging with the female screw 15 on an outer circumference, and a return spring 12 energizing the screw rod 11 in a direction protruding from the female screw member 10. The slackness of a chain 6 is absorbed by protrusion of the screw rod 11 from the female screw member 10. A head 17 with an outer diameter larger than the inner diameter of the female screw member 10 is formed in a protruding portion of the screw rod 11 from the female screw member 10, and the rotation of the screw rod 11 is prevented through a rotary frictional resistance generated in the head 17 when the screw rod 11 is screwed into the female screw member 10.
