<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gripping device having excellent gripping performance which elongates the life of an expandable bag body and sufficiently ensures a contact area between the outer peripheral surface of the expandable bag body and the inner peripheral surface of a workpiece. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The gripping device 1 includes a cylindrical tube 31 with both ends open, and a bar-like or cylindrical body 2. The workpiece 23 is gripped by allowing the tube 31 to extend so that the peripheral surface of the tube 31 and the peripheral surface of the workpiece 23 are brought into contact with each other by supplying a fluid F into a supply/exhaust space 15. The workpiece 23 is separated by releasing the contact between the peripheral surface of the tube and the spherical surface of the workpiece 23 by exhausting the fluid F within the supply/exhaust space 15. The tube 31 is formed of a tube body and a contact surface body attached to an outer peripheral surface 37 of the tube body. The entire outer surface of the contact surface body makes surface-contacts with the inner peripheral surface 13 of the workpiece 23 when the fluid F is supplied into the supply/exhaust space 15.
