PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a preform for a composite material, upon impregnation of a molten metal, which can suppress seizure between the molten metal and a core, and to provide a method for producing a metal composite body obtained by compounding the preform for a composite material and a metal base material. SOLUTION: The production method is characterized in that the outer circumferential face of a cylindrical filter 21 is covered with a nonwoven fabric 25 having many irregularities, and it is immersed into a mixed solution 31 and is sucked from the inside of the cylindrical filter 21 so as to mold a cylindrical preliminarily molded body 2 in which a reinforcing material is crowded, and also, many irregularities are formed on the whole of the inner circumferential face at the outside of the nonwoven fabric 25, and thereafter, the preliminarily molded body 2 is sintered so as to form a preform 1 for a cylindrical composite material. The preform 1 for a composite material formed by this method is externally fitted into the core of a die and is arranged at the inside of a cavity, and a molten metal is impregnated therein, thus the generation of seizure between the molten metal and the core can be sufficiently suppressed.
