<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage device, an adapter, and a diagnostic method, which can be diagnosed in a short period of time. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A relay device includes a plurality of processing circuits which cooperatively execute a data relay process between a host device and a storage device. If a process to be executed by an own processing circuit is terminated, each processing circuit begins a self-diagnosis process for the own processing circuit. The relay device has an upstream circuit as a processing circuit which executes a process in more upstream than any processes executed by the respective processing circuits and controls the starts of the processes of the respective processing circuits. In the relay device, the upstream circuit executes the process so that a new process does not occur in a processing circuit starting a self-diagnosis process when the processing circuit starts the self-diagnosis process.
