PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a generation management technology of a file for executing the backup of a generation update object file by selecting any of a plurality of generation management processing systems based on characteristics of the file. SOLUTION: The generation management system is configured to perform generation management to a generation update object file 103 stored in a temporary file recording part 102 and generation-categorized generation files 105 to 107 stored in a generation file recording part 104, and provided with a generation management DB 116 for registering conditions of the generation management processing of each file designation for managing generation wherein generation management processing is performed on the basis of the registered conditions by any of a number of generation management processing means 110, a storage number of date management processing means 111, a date number management processing means 112 based on a calendar, a generation management processing means 113 for performing generation management based on a disk residual capacity, and a plurality of generation intensive management processing means 114 for putting together the plurality of generations in a certain period, and the compression of the files is performed by a compression processing part 115.
