<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently advance the esterification reaction in water using sulfuric acid. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a flask, 4-Phenylbutyric acid (4.4 mmol), sulfuric acid (0.20 mmol) as a Broensted acid, and N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-N-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine (0.20 mmol) as an organic base are added, and agitated at 80°C for 30 minutes. The above mixture is added to 1-dodecanol (4.0 mmol) and water (2 mL), and are vigorously agitated at 60°C. A reaction mixture is allowed to cool down to room temperature and thereafter subjected to the<SP>1</SP>H NMR (CDCl<SB>3</SB>) analyst to calculate the yield which is found to be 85%.
