The device (1) has a cyclically pressurizable upper tool (2) arranged in a retaining plate (4) and guided into a guide plate (5). A decoupling of the tool against downward movement of the retaining plate is triggered by a control unit (10) after completion of a punching operation. The control unit includes a control element (11) and another control element (12). The latter control element is moved from a pressure position of the control unit in which the latter control element pressurizes the tool into a release position in which the tool is decoupled by application of pressure. An independent claim is also included for a method for punching of a workpiece i.e. strip material.
