The method involves switching off a suction engine (12), so that an outflow filter bag wall section is slumped down in a direction of a filter bag wall, which lies opposite to the outflow filter bag wall section. The suction engine is switched on, so that the outflow filter bag wall section is pulled by a suction flow (13) in a direction of a suction outlet. A filter pie topping is partially released from the outflow filter bag wall section by slumping down and/or motion towards the suction outlet. A surface area and/or weight of the wall section is measured. An independent claim is also included for a suction device for performing a method for operating the suction device.
