<p>Disclosed is a nonvolatile liquid crystal display device having memory characteristics which can be utilized for an electronic paper. The nonvolatile liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal display panel (6) including a scanning signal line group, a data signal line group intersecting the scanning signal line group, and a plurality of pixel circuits arranged at the intersections and containing a nonvolatile liquid crystal compound as a liquid crystal layer; a drive circuit for driving the liquid crystal display panel; a power supply circuit (5) for supplying a voltage to the drive circuit; a VRAM (3) for temporarily storing image data to be displayed on the liquid crystal display panel; and a control circuit (2) for sequentially transferring the image data stored in the VRAM to the liquid crystal display panel. When an image rewrite signal for writing new image data is received from a CPU (1) during transfer, the control circuit (2) cancels transfer while maintaining power supply to the drive circuit, and stores the new image data in the VRAM (3). In a cholesteric liquid crystal of simple matrix control, such an effect is attained as the time interval up to writing of a next screen can be shortened when writing of an image is canceled on the way.</p> |
