Producing (meth)acrolein, by heterogeneous catalyzed gas phase-partial oxidation, comprises guiding reaction gas mixture through a fresh fixed catalyst bed present in a reactor at increased temperature, where: the reaction gas mixture includes diluent gas inertially present under the conditions of the heterogeneously catalyzed gas phase partial oxidation in addition to partially oxidizing organic precursor compound and molecular oxygen as an oxidizing agent in a molar ratio of oxygen:organic precursor compound of >= 1; the active composition of catalyst of the fixed catalyst bed is a multielement oxide containing at least one of the elements of molybdenum, iron, and bismuth and one or both elements of nickel and cobalt; the method is carried out within the first 8000 hours of the fresh fixed catalyst bed, during which reaction gas mixture supplied to the fixed catalyst bed contains at least 3 vol.% of partially oxidized organic precursor compound during loading the fixed catalyst bed with the organic precursor compound of 40 Nl/l.hour, at least 90 mol.% of the organic precursor compound contained in the mixture are converted through the fixed catalyst bed related to the single pass of the reaction gas mixture and the highest temperature of the reaction gas mixture is 300[deg] C during the passage through the fixed catalyst bed, so that the highest temperature of the reaction gas mixture passing through the fixed catalyst bed is 400-450[deg] C at X hours (where X is 10-500 hours) and less than 400[deg] C during 8000-X operating hours and is greater than for 8000-X operating hours over time arithmetic average load of the fixed catalyst bed with partially oxidized organic precursor compound.</p>
