The present invention relates to a system and to a method for protecting digital media content, which are capable of not only blocking the illegal use of media content in various formats at the source, but also of reducing system load and maximizing content reusability while maintaining compatibility with existing systems. The system for protecting digital media content comprises a packager and a digital rights management (DRM) server. The packager analyzes the format of content in order to encrypt at least a portion of an actual data region located in a payload of the corresponding format, and inserts encrypted information, containing at least an encrypted key value or content information, into the content so as to generate encrypted content. The DRM server receives the encrypted information and a license request from an external device that received the encrypted information, identifies the encrypted information to generate a license used for decrypting the encrypted content, and provides the generated license to the external device.
