[Also in Group XXXVI] In an electric signal amplifier network comprising a transistor, an impedance element is connected in either the signal input circuit, or the signal output circuit, of such value that the other circuit has a desired impedance. Fig. 3 shows a grounded base transistor amplifier circuit have a base electrode 5, emitter electrode 3, collector electrode 4 and the usual biasing sources 10, 11. Input signals from source 12 are applied through impedance Z1 to the emitter, and amplified signals appear in load Z2. Fig. 5 shows the equivalent circuit in which Zb, Ze, and Zc are the base, emitter and collector impedances respectively and e' represents a fictitious generator whose e.m.f. is proportional to the emitter current (i.e. e<SP>1</SP>=Zm ie). The way in which the values of Ze, Zb, Zc and Zm may be determined by external impedance measurements is described, and if the operating frequency is not excessive these are resistances, the approximate values being as follows : Ze from 200 to 800 ohms; Zb from 100 to 600 ohms; Zc from 1,500 to 30,000 ohms and Zm from 10,000 to 50,000 ohms. The ratio of increments of collector current to increments of emitter current is termed α and is shown to equal (Zm+Zb)/ (Zc+Zb). Three distinct types of transistor are described having different relative values of electrode impedances. It is shown mathematically that for the circuit in Figs. 3 and 5, the input impedance and the output impedance This circuit and also " grounded emitter" and "grounded collector" circuits are analysed for each of the three types of transistors, and it is shown that in certain cases, by varying the resistive load Z2 the input impedance may be made infinite, positive, zero or negative, and also that by varying Z1 the output impedance may be made positive, zero or negative. Circuits having zero input impedance may be used for current measurements, and circuits in which the input impedance may be varied between zero and infinity by moderate variations of Z2 may be used in absorption modulation systems. In one modification, Fig. 29 (not shown), an additional resistance Rp is connected in series with the collector, so that an infinite impedance input circuit can be provided while still permitting the output circuit to be matched to a specified load. The use of feedback resistances, Figs. 31, 33, 35 (not shown) is also described to increase flexibility in design. Multistage amplifiers are also described, Figs. 37-41 (not shown), and reference is made to the method of achieving impedance matching between the stages, sometimes by utilizing additional series resistances, or feedback resistance arrangements as previously described. Reference is made to Specifications 694,025 and 700,235 regarding the use of one or more resistances to provide the emitter bias. Specifications 694,021 and 700,232 also are referred to.
