Class 60 [Also in Group XXX] A magnetic chuck for holding ferro-magnetic work pieces in a grinding, polishing or analogous operation comprises a conveyer of non-magnetic material on which the work pieces can be supported and an assembly of magnetised or magnetisable rollers situated beneath and in contact with the conveyor at the part where the operation is to be performed on the work pieces. As shown, work pieces a of sheet iron or steel are carried beneath a polishing mop b, grinding wheel or the like on an endless flexible band c of non-magnetic material C. At the working position, the operative run of the band is supported on a stationary plate d of non- magnetic material and beneath this plate are arranged magnetisable rollers c, the plate being gapped opposite the rollers to enable these latter to contact the band. The rollers are rotatably supported on spindles g of non-magnetic material, the rollers on each spindle interleaving with those on adjacent spindles. Permanent magnets f are arranged between the rollers on each spindle: alternatively, the rollers may be magnetised by electro-magnets or may themselves be made as permanent magnets. When the work pieces pass beneath the mop b, they are firmly held against movement relatively to the band c by the magnetic action of the rollers. The band c may be replaced by a rotary table of non-magnetic material.
