The present invention discloses a method for increasing the pool of Ngn3+ endocrine progenitor cells obtained from stem cells, by contacting said stem cells with a SUR1/Kir6.2 channel inhibitor. The invention also relates to a method for increasing the mass of pancreatic endocrine cells, in particular of ² cells. The invention further concerns a method for treating diabetes.
