<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a printer in which the top cover is prevented from closing forcibly with its own weight and, at the same time, a user can close the top cover quickly. <P>SOLUTION: The printer comprises a damper acting on the top cover, a contact sensor provided in the periphery on the lower surface of the top cover in order to detect contact of the finger of a person, and an infrared sensor for detecting a part of human body existing in the top cover. When the contact sensor does not detect contact of a finger and the infrared sensor detected a part of human body (Yes at #4), the damper is made to act with strong action force (#5), and when the contact sensor detected contact of a finger or the infrared sensor does not detect a part of human body (No at #4), the damper is made to act with weak action force (#6).
