摘要
668,904. Glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. March 6, 1950 [March 11, 1949], No. 5623/50. Class 56. Moulds are charged with glass by issuing a stream of molten glass from a supply body, increasing the rate of issuance of glass from the body to form a mould charge in the stream, severing the stream from the supply body immediately before the formation of the mould charge therein, and again severing the stream from the supply body immediately after the formation of the mould charge therein. The invention is particularly for use when charges are required at long intervals or irregularly, which normally would be impracticable because of the chilling of glass near the extrusion opening. It is described as applied to the usual foreheath 11 having a bottom extrusion opening 22 controlled by an axially movable vertical needle 12. The needle is arranged so that a stream of glass issues continuously from the opening 22, the chilling of the glass near the opening 22 being thus avoided. When the needle is raised to initiate the formation of a charge, the shears sever the stream from the supply, and when the needle has substantially completed its charge-extruding movement, they are again operated to sever the charge from the supply. The arrangement is substantially as described in Specification 227,078, [Class 56], the cam 25, which, with the needle-actuating cam 20, is on a shaft 26, being modified to effect two operations of the shears for each reciprocation of the needle. The shaft 26 is driven, through worm gearing, from a shaft 27 coupled by chain gearing 28 to a countershaft 30. A motor 33 drives the shaft 30 through a clutch 31 whenever the clutch control cam 32 is freed for rotation. The cam 32 is normally held against rotation by a spring-urged bell crank 34, 34a, a magnet 37 being momentarily energized to free the arm 34a from the cam. The bell crank is then held away from the cam by a spring-urged lever 41 which engages the arm 34 until the shaft 30 has made sufficient revolutions to produce one revolution of the shaft 26. The magnet 45 is then energized, by an arm on the shaft 26 closing contacts 46, and the bell crank is released to engage the cam 32.
