[Also in Group XXI] Jet-propelled missile intended to be fired from a gun or a similar projector comprises a shell 1 and an axially arranged body 2 adjustable longitudinally relative to the shell. When inserted in the gun the forward edge 3 of the shell closely fits the protruding surface of the body 2. An annular combustion chamber 6 between the body 2 and the shell contains a rocket propellent powder 7 surrounded by a layer of solid fuel 8. On firing, the missile is accelerated by the resultant pressure within the firing device acting on the exterior of the shell behind'a gas check 10 and on the inner surface of the combustion chamber. When the missile has left the firing device it is further accelerated by the combustion gases from the burning rocket propellent. These gases maintain the body 2 in the forward position. When combustion of the propellent has ended, the fall in pressure in the combustion chamber allows the body. 2 to be retarded by the -air pressure on its nose 4. Thus an annular nozzle 5, Fig. 2, is exposed through which air enters the combustion chamber. The fuel 8 is ignited and the combustion gases escape through the exhaust nozzle 9, the narrowest section of which is enlarged by the displacement of the body 2. The fuels used may be solid, liquid or gaseous or a combination of such fuels.
