<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly prepare a proper paper set even when a paper feeding error is generated in gathering action. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the gathering device 10, a by-pass conveying passage 100 is provided such that the paper set is branched from a main conveying passage where it is usually conveyed and is merged again. A recovery tray is arranged on each of the by-pass conveying passages 100 and is provided so as to store the paper reset. A gathering control part continues feeding out of the other paper to be included in the paper set even when the paper feeding error is detected in any one of the paper feeding trays 40 during the preparation step of any paper set, and controls conveying of the paper so as to store the prepared error set in the recovery tray. The gathering control part controls conveying of the paper so as to return it to the main conveying passage by preparing the proper paper set by applying recovery treatment for supplementing the deficient paper to the error set by feeding out the paper again from the paper feeding tray 40 in which the paper feeding error is subsequently detected.
