The method involves monitoring torque (M) applied on a shaft (22) by an electric motor (24), current strength (I) of current drawn by the electric motor or power (P) drawn by the electric motor as a monitored parameter. Angle or angular speed is determined for rotating the shaft based on the monitored parameter. A variable ratio gear unit (18) is locked when the monitored parameter exceeds a limiting value, where the shaft is guided into the variable ratio gear unit. Another shaft (16) is rotated in a steering system by a steering element (14). An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a steering element for rotating wheels.
