The method involves dividing a value-added chain into individual value-added chains. Each individual value-added chain is segmented into process steps. Each process step is formed on a process element selected from a set of pre-defined process elements. Data specifying a sequence of the process elements is recorded in a data record. The data records of the individual value-added chains are compared, and event risk priority numbers are computed for each group of homogeneous individual value-added chains. A weighted event risk priority number is computed from the event risk priority numbers. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for controlling of a value-added chain i.e. supply chain, for production of a product consisting of multiple elements (2) a data processing mechanism for analysis of a value-added chain for production of a product consisting of multiple elements, comprising a control unit (3) a computer program product having set of instructions for analyzing or controlling of a value-added chain for production of a product consisting of multiple elements.
