The capacitive display and operating element has a sensor plate, where a capacitive convergence or contact sensor electrode is provided at the front side. An illuminant is arranged at the rear side of the sensor plate. The illuminant clamps the sensor plate such that the sensor plate is arranged at the front side of the illuminant. A sensor value is evaluated in the control logic depending on a control operation at the display and operating element. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a capacitive display and operating unit; and (2) an arrangement of a capacitive display and operating unit with a capacitive display and operating element.
