<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the relative positional relationship between a needle hole and a sewing needle, and to prevent shortcomings such as interference between a needle plate and the sewing needle which is caused by slippage of a needle point position from a regular position. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The lower end of a head portion 4 is provided with an image sensor 23 for imaging the sewing needle 7 and the needle hole 11 in a diagonally left downward direction on the front side. An image picked up by the image sensor 23 is subjected to image processing such as binarization processing or contour (edge) extraction processing, and contour images of the sewing needle 7 and the needle hole 11 are extracted.
