PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten processing time by providing a high processing rate shortly after the start of grinding, in grinding a major surface of a mirror-finished plate glass with fine abrasive grains. SOLUTION: A method for producing a glass substrate for a magnetic disk includes: a surface grinding step wherein the mirror-finished plate glass having the mirror-finished major surface is processed using fixed abrasive grains so that the plate glass has a required flatness and surface roughness. The method further includes, before the surface grinding step using the fixed abrasive grains, a surface-roughening step wherein the surface of the mirror-finished plate glass is roughened by frosting.
