PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen separator having excellent hydrogen separating performance and durability. SOLUTION: The hydrogen separator 1 includes a reaction vessel 2 having a raw material inlet 3, a hydrogen outlet 4, an outlet 5 for residue of the raw material and a fluid passage 6 passing from the raw material inlet 3, to the hydrogen outlet 4 and the outlet 5 for residue of the raw material, a selectively hydrogen-permeation portion 11 which is arranged in the fluid passage to separate the fluid passage 6 into the first passage 7 connecting with the raw material inlet 3 and the outlet 5 for residue of the raw material and the second passage 8 connecting with the hydrogen outlet 4, having a selectively hydrogen-permeable metal film 12 allowing hydrogen contained in the fluid of the raw material to permeate selectively and causing hydrogen selectively to permeate from the first passage 7 through the selectively hydrogen-permeable metal film 12 to the second passage 8, and a raw material fluid supplying portion 31 communicating with the first passage 7 at the raw material inlet 3 and supplying the raw material fluid from the raw material inlet 3 into the first passage 7 while preparing the raw material fluid so that the concentration of oxygen on the surface of the selectively hydrogen-permeable metal film 12 is equal to or higher than 0.1% and lower than 5.0%.
