The invention relates to systems for measuring the movement rate of any movable apparatus, which systems use a video image of an underlying surface. The proposed method makes it possible to produce, on the basis of the rate of travel of a video image projected onto the sensory element of a video camera (video matrix), an estimate of the travel of an apparatus on which said camera is mounted. The proposed method also makes it possible to measure the height at which the camera is located relative to the underlying surface if the rate of movement of the apparatus on which the camera is mounted is known.
