<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine for easily and precisely sewing a button on a cloth. Ž<P>SOLUTION: As for the sewing machine, an image of a button placed near a needle position is picked up by an image sensor. The position of at least two holes of button holes is recognized from the picked up image (S11). On the basis of the recognized positions of the button holes, the rocking position of a needle bar is set so that a needle goes through the two holes (S12). When an expected needle location of the needle derived from the set rocking position matches the positions of the button holes placed (S15: YES), the sewing machine shifts to a sewing possible state (S17) and, while it rocks the needle bar at the set rocking position in turn, it moves the needle bar up and down to sew button on the cloth (S18).
