PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and a copying machine in which vertical stripes in a read image can be made inconspicuous. SOLUTION: An original MS transported by a reading entrance roller pair 89 to an opposed guide member 99 passes through an original reading position while being sucked onto the opposed guide member 99 by a suction force of a suction fan 301. As a result, the original is transported with a distance H between the original and a platen glass 154.
