PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a fatty acid alkyl ester, capable of producing the fatty acid alkyl ester without needing a multiprocess and long time. SOLUTION: The method produces a fatty acid alkyl ester by performing the transesterification of a fat-and-oil and an aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a sodium-based catalyst or a potassium-based catalyst. The method includes a process wherein, before the reaction mixture after the transesterification is subjected to a phase separation into a light liquid and a heavy liquid so as to insulate them from each other, a water-soluble acid is added to the reaction mixture.
