<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a renewal method for an elevator capable of shortening a construction period in renewal construction and reducing discarding cost. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the renewal method for the elevator, a hydraulic elevator 100 provided with a plunger device 5 erected in a hoistway 9 and a plunger rail 6 for guiding expansion/contraction in a vertical direction of the plunger device 5 is renewed to a rope type elevator 1. The plunger device 5 is removed, the plunger rail 6 is left in the hoistway 9, a balance weight 21 guided by the plunger rail 6 is newly provided, and the plunger rail 6 is made as a part of the guide rail 22 for the balance weight.
